Scissor Basics
There are two ways scissors are made, forged steel (heated, and hammered under high pressure) or cast, melted steel poured into molds.
Forged scissors are handmade they can take a finer edge on the blade allowing more variation with cutting techniques without pulling and ripping hair. They are also designed to last and be repaired and serviced as required.
In contrast to cast scissors which are made on mass and designed for basic cutting forms, cast scissors aren’t made of very good quality steel so they are brittle and become damaged very quickly, They can pull and rip hair when trying to perform more modern cutting techniques.
Some cast scissors are passed off as expensive scissors they are not no matter what they say a cast scissor is a cheap scissor, where as a forged scissor doesn’t mean it’s expensive, but it dose mean it is a real tool and designed for all modern styling,
Blade edges
Depending on what steel the scissor is made of will determine what edge the scissor blade will hold;
Bevel edge……..32-50 degree (blunt cutting straight lines)
Shell edge…35-40 degree (all-round blade, most modern cutting)
Serrated edge……45 degree (only blunt cutting)
Handle styles
There are lots of different styled handles,(off set,crane,straight) they are made this way as everyone has different hands and your scissors should be comfortable so the handles allow for this variation in hand size.
When trying scissors make sure your knuckles are kept flat and you can count 4 knuckles while you have the scissors in the cutting position, if they do then they fit. (This reduces the risk of hand and wrist problems)
All round scissors
Make sure the length of the blade is between 3/4 and full length of your middle finger.
When in your hand in the cutting position all your knuckles are visible and straight.
